Entre Máscaras y Memorias
This project grew out of Sofía’s exploration of Tunantada, a traditional music and dance festival from Jauja in Junín, Peru. Through a series of drawings and paintings, she reflects on the musicians of the traditional orchestra, the different characters of the festival, and especially the masks of the Tunantada.
Particularly drawn to the contrast between Andean faces and the exaggerated masks used in the celebration, and to what these layers of identity reveal about representation and memory. The title refers to this relationship between the visible and the hidden, between performance and the histories that continue to shape it.
Musically, Víctor Sotomayor created original compositions that weave together elements of Tunantada music, Andean traditions more broadly, and the language of jazz. The result is not a reproduction, but a dialogue, an exploration of how these sounds meet, relate to one another, and create different possibilities.
